Dalam memperbaiki komputer atau CPU, yang perlu dilakukan pertama kali adalah mengenali atau diagnosa kerusakan pada komputer Anda. Ada beberapa jenis kerusakan yang sering terjadi pada sebuah CPU, yaitu:

1. CPU mati sama sekali dan di layar monitor tidak keluar pesan apapun
2. CPU nyala tapi di layar monitor tidak tampak pesan apapun
3. CPU nyala dan di layar monitor keluar pesan "insert booting system"
Untuk jenis kerusakan yang pertama, yang perlu Anda lakukan adalah memeriksa power supply, apakah memang mati atau masih bisa menyala dengan baik dengan memakai indikator Fan. Caranya, colokkan kabel power pada power supply lalu konsletkan/hubungkan kabel warna hijau dan hitam. Kalau fan-nya berputar dengan kencang berarti kondisi supply masih bagus, kalau tidak, berarti ya harus diganti dengan supply yang masih bagus.
Untuk kasus yang kedua, ini bisa terjadi juga karena beberapa peripheral komputer yang kemungkinan mengalami kerusakan atau trouble. Kemungkinan pertama adalah baterei BIOSnya atau baterei CMOS, solusinya mudah saja, jumper pada mainboard di-clear saja, kalau masih gak bisa nyala ya harus diganti. Jika clear CMOS sdh dilakukan dan baterei sudah diganti dengan yang baru tetapi masih belum bisa booting, kemungkinan berikutnya adalah VGA CARD, MEMORI, MAINBOARD dan yang paling jarang terjadi adalah prosesornya yang rusak. Sedangkan untuk kasus yang ketiga, hal itu bisa terjadi karena ada masalah pada Harddisknya. Mulai dari salah jumper, belum diformat, system rusak, salah setting booting dari BIOS SETUP sampai dengan rusaknya harddisk itu sendiri.
